January has come and gone so fast! 2017 is off to a crazy start. I'll start this newsletter off with a post from one of the owners of MGA. Share this with anyone who needs to hear it! "To my conservative family and friends: You have been given a gift. The gift is this: Your guy won, your team has the house and the senate. And it's going....not great. My charge to you is this: figure out how you want to be represented in history. You are on the cusp of being the party that rose up and fought for what you told us you stood for, or you can be the people we have to explain to our children when they ask why no one fought the breakdown of our democracy. If you voted for the president or a Republican senator because you believe in fiscal conservatism, you should be furious that your tax dollars are going to build a wall that will have zero impact on the effects of immigration. If you hate the left because of "Political Correctness," you need to be asking yourself if you're okay with the President censoring communications from MULTIPLE government organizations like the National Park Service, the EPA and more. If you voted because you hated Secretary Clinton's email server, I expect you to be calling your representatives to ask why Steve Bannon and others continue to use their unsecured personal emails and why your president is using an unsecured android device still. If you voted because you believed there would be better protection against terrorists, you need to ask yourself why it's okay that your president just took away $130 million in anti-terror funds from New York with his punishment of Sanctuary Cities. If you are angry that your insurance is too expensive, you should ask why your senators are repealing ACA without a replacement, an action that will leave 20 million people without insurance at all. If you believe the Clinton initiative provided unequal treatment to countries that supported their foundation, you should be livid that your president has moved to block visas from Muslim countries like Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, but not places where he has business ties like Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. This is an opportunity to prove that you voted for the reasons you say you did. I am taking you seriously; I am taking you literally." -Levi Frerichs On January 21st, Miss Gay Metropolitan America was held at the Grey Fox under the new ownership of Adria Andrews. The night was amazing and one I will remember forever. I got to work with forever MGMA Krista Versace who will be celebrating her 20th Anniversary at MGMA 2017. Krista is and always will be an inspiration to so many in the MGMA family. Congrats on 20 years here's to many more! 4 contestants came out to compete for Miss Gay Metropolitan America but in the end, it would be Tabbi Katt to capture the title and L'Oréal as her first alternate! Congratulations to you both on getting your tickets to MGMA Comicon in April! I would like to put the spotlight on someone for a moment, Roxxy Malone AKA Robbie Lawson. I remember the first conversation we had about you entering your first pageant and how nervous you were. You came and impressed me your first time out. Though you didn't capture the title you took your critiques and applied them to better yourself. Seeing you compete for Metropolitan and seeing your growth in such a short time is truly inspiring! This growth reminded me of what pageantry is all about. So many think all you need to do is by a wig, heels, and make up and boom! You are and entertainer overnight. This type of thinking is coming partially due to RuPaul's Drag Race being so popular. It has been said several times and I'll say it again. The only way to grow is to accept your failures and take the lessons you’ve learned and apply them to better yourself. Hard work and determination will get you everywhere! It was great to see so many promoters and qualified contestants out to support Miss Gay Metropolitan America:
I also had the honor of being a part of Transformation 2017 All-Stars. Transformations is a charity gala where 13 women were paired with a drag queen and they compete for a cash prize to be donated to a local charity of their choice. I had the pleasure of working with Lisa Carter who did a fantastic job. I traveled up to St. Joseph to support the efforts of Vivian Versace as she raised money for MGMA. It was great to see her support system made up of friends and family as well as the support for fellow contestants! We only have three preliminaries left! And about 2 months to go!
