Kyla's Kazoo - April 2016

Happy April Everyone,
 To think this is the last newsletter of my reign is incredibly exhilarating. The time progressed quickly, and I imagine this will ring true for our last few days prior to crowning our 2016 winner.
My reign concluded with two final preliminaries in March; one in Saint Louis and the other in Kansas City. First up was a QUICK road trip to my home away from home, Saint Louis, for The Miss Gay Spirit of Saint Louis, America pageant. I hit the road early the day of registration with Sparkle Iman and Daniel Rinehart stowed safely in my passenger seats. One thing that I have learned over this year is that Sparkle, unbeknownst to me, has gifted me with her talents behind the wheel. We arrived with about an hour and a half to spare… record timing compared to my usual driving skills! Upon check-in, we had 3 lovely contestants entering to capture two of the four last tickets to the state competition. Throughout the categories, I had the privilege of sitting next to an individual, Christopher Greenfield, who has judged me on multiple occasions at the state competition, and it was great to spend some time catching up with him since our paths last crossed in Saint Louis at the 2014 state competition. At the end of the evening after a close battle, L’Oreal had claimed victory with Kirsten Dubo grabbing the first alternate position. Congratulations to both individuals as they now prepare for the state level contest.

​Our final preliminary of the season happened to be a new addition to our Prelim Family, and it was a pleasure having this one flourish in my back yard right here in Kansas City. Miss Gay Paris of the Plains took place the second to last weekend at Sidekicks Saloon where we had 4 gentlemen enter in hopes of acquiring our last two spots. The pageant was very successful with quite the turnout, and at the end of the evening Regina La-Rae walked away with the crown and emeritus title with Dakota Riviera placing as her first alternate.  Good luck to both of you as you prepare for MGMA2016.

This concludes our preliminary season, and we can now say with confidence that we will have 18 contestants at the state level on April 7th through the 9th right here in Kansas City. To summarize the contestants and their qualifications, listed below are our hopeful candidates for the 2016 title:

​And that’s a wrap! Looking at the list of names above brings me to tears of joy… This year’s talent pool has quite the variety, and I know all of you are coming in with something unique to offer. I will be ecstatic to crown any one of you because I know that you all have what it takes to showcase a crisp package all week long, and will then dig even deeper to ensure that your reign from start to finish will be seen as one that exudes that same EXCELLENCE!
As my reign comes to a completion, these next few weeks will be adorned with costume fittings, tasks of lyric memorization, and basking in these last few moments. I hope that this will either be the same for you or that you are taking a moment to relax, having already set yourself up for success. Either way, I look forward to continuing our text/phone conversations and equally look forward to seeing you all very soon as we swiftly approach the crowning of our next Miss Gay Missouri.

As all the contests finish up there final preparations. We would like to take this time to point out the categories and the scoring system of the Miss Gay America system.

 MALE INTERVIEW 
General Appearance-               0 to 20 Points
Personality-                              0 to 30 Points
Ability to Communicate-           0 to 50 Points
Answer Content-                     0 to 50 Points
Total points                            150 possible points per judge
The purpose of Male Interview is to place the contestant in a situation answering different types of questions and judging how he will react to their diversity. The context of the answer is important but more important is how the contestant conveys that answer.  

SOLO TALENT
Choreography and Appearance -
(physical Coordination, Stage Presence, Costuming)      0 to 30 points
Quality- 
(Lip-Sync, Live Vocal, and/or Other Entertainment)      0 to 30 points
Entertainment Value-                                                    0 to 40 points 
Total points                                                            100 possible points per judge

Solo talent showcases the ability to perform without the aid of visual enhancements such as props or dancers. Contestants will be judged under the same guidelines as the full-length talent (please see TALENT description) presentation as it relates to the subcategories listed above. Solo Talents will not exceed three (3) minutes in length. 

EVENING GOWN
Suitability for Evening Gown -                           0 to 30 Points
Suitability of Hairstyle -                                     0 to 20 Points
Presentation 
(Modeling Technique, Poise, Smile, Etc.)-         0 to 40 Points;
General Appearance 
(Make-Up, Shoes, Gown Condition, Accessories)-      0 to 60 Points
TOTAL POINTS                                                  150 possible points per judge

Evening Gown will be the most elegant apparel of the pageant. It should complement the contestant’s figure. It will be a statement of the contestant’s style and taste. The dress and accessories should be in perfect condition

.ON-STAGE INTERVIEW
Ability to communicate                                                                          0 to 25 Points
Answer content                                                                                     0 to 25 Points
Total points                                                               50 points possible per judge
Scoring should be based on personality and poise, the ability to communicate on a microphone in front of an audience, and the context of the answer in relation to the topic given. The contestants should be prepared to give a brief biography to the audience, in the instance that stall time is required. The brief biography, if needed, will not be a judged portion of the ON-Stage Question Category but rather, may be needed to “set the mood” for the On-Stage Interview.

TALENT

Choreography-

Talent is the highest point category in the pageant. Contestants will be judged on their quality of lip-sync, live vocal, or other entertainment.

Each contestant should work very detailed on each category no one category should have more attention. Always remember consistency wins the pageant.
