Happy April Everyone, To think this is the last newsletter of my reign is incredibly exhilarating. The time progressed quickly, and I imagine this will ring true for our last few days prior to crowning our 2016 winner. My reign concluded with two final preliminaries in March; one in Saint Louis and the other in Kansas City. First up was a QUICK road trip to my home away from home, Saint Louis, for The Miss Gay Spirit of Saint Louis, America pageant. I hit the road early the day of registration with Sparkle Iman and Daniel Rinehart stowed safely in my passenger seats. One thing that I have learned over this year is that Sparkle, unbeknownst to me, has gifted me with her talents behind the wheel. We arrived with about an hour and a half to spare… record timing compared to my usual driving skills! Upon check-in, we had 3 lovely contestants entering to capture two of the four last tickets to the state competition. Throughout the categories, I had the privilege of sitting next to an individual, Christopher Greenfield, who has judged me on multiple occasions at the state competition, and it was great to spend some time catching up with him since our paths last crossed in Saint Louis at the 2014 state competition. At the end of the evening after a close battle, L’Oreal had claimed victory with Kirsten Dubo grabbing the first alternate position. Congratulations to both individuals as they now prepare for the state level contest. Our final preliminary of the season happened to be a new addition to our Prelim Family, and it was a pleasure having this one flourish in my back yard right here in Kansas City. Miss Gay Paris of the Plains took place the second to last weekend at Sidekicks Saloon where we had 4 gentlemen enter in hopes of acquiring our last two spots. The pageant was very successful with quite the turnout, and at the end of the evening Regina La-Rae walked away with the crown and emeritus title with Dakota Riviera placing as her first alternate. Good luck to both of you as you prepare for MGMA2016. This concludes our preliminary season, and we can now say with confidence that we will have 18 contestants at the state level on April 7th through the 9th right here in Kansas City. To summarize the contestants and their qualifications, listed below are our hopeful candidates for the 2016 title: Miss Gay River City, Missouri – Moltyn Decadence First Alt to Miss Gay River City – Kyra Banks Miss Gay Metropolitan, Missouri – Vivian Versace First Alt to Miss Gay Metropolitan – Mulan Miss Gay Gateway, Missouri – Allessandra Blaze First Alt to Miss Gay Gateway – Crystal Lace Miss Gay Saint Louis, Missouri – Nadia M Louis First Alt to Miss Gay Saint Louis – Bella Rose Miss Gay Springfield, Missouri – Karma T Cassidy First Alt to Miss Gay Springfield – Miss Priscilla Miss Gay Heart of Missouri – D’Rihanna Weatherbey First Alt to Miss Gay Heart of Missouri – Musica Malone Miss Gay Kansas City, Missouri – Monique Heart First Alt to Miss Gay Kansas City – Ruby Diamond Miss Gay Spirit of Saint Louis, Missouri – L’Oreal First Alt to Miss Gay Spirit of Saint Louis – Kirsten Dubo Miss Gay Paris of the Plains, Missouri – Regina La-Rae First Alt to Miss Gay Paris of the Plains – Dakota Riviera And that’s a wrap! Looking at the list of names above brings me to tears of joy… This year’s talent pool has quite the variety, and I know all of you are coming in with something unique to offer. I will be ecstatic to crown any one of you because I know that you all have what it takes to showcase a crisp package all week long, and will then dig even deeper to ensure that your reign from start to finish will be seen as one that exudes that same EXCELLENCE! As my reign comes to a completion, these next few weeks will be adorned with costume fittings, tasks of lyric memorization, and basking in these last few moments. I hope that this will either be the same for you or that you are taking a moment to relax, having already set yourself up for success. Either way, I look forward to continuing our text/phone conversations and equally look forward to seeing you all very soon as we swiftly approach the crowning of our next Miss Gay Missouri. Happy March, Another month has come and gone, and with that we are only 38 days away from our first preliminary night of competition… I can feel the intensity levels rising within each of you! Even with the extra day this year, February vanished within the blink of an eye! The first weekend in February we held Miss Gay Kansas City at Missie B’s. Working with the promoters of this preliminary, Jeff Hickman and Sam Vermillion, is always a delight. Upon the day of registration, we had 3 very qualified contestants (who have all competed at the state level before) throw their ring in the hat in hopes of achieving this title. Moltyn Decadence opened the evening with a production number with 2 backup dancers that wowed the crowd and showed that she was hard at work in preparing for this special evening. While all 3 contestants showed up with their guns loaded, Monique Hearts claimed the victory at the end of the night with Ruby Diamond placing as first alternate. Something very important that I noticed about this preliminary is that each contestant had walked away with winning at least one of the five categories. That being said, what created this victory for Monique was the consistency that she had across all five categories. Congratulations to both individuals as they are now qualified for the state competition! Valentine’s Day was also one for the books this year. It was my first Valentine’s Day in 8 years that I approached as being single. That being said, I enjoyed every moment of it as I had the best cuddles in the world! I spent the day lounging on the couch “Netflix and chilling” with my little James Dean. That night I baked some delicious salmon for myself and cut up some ultra-scrumptious Scooby bites to mix in his food which made for 2 very delectable meals. This day, along with the month, will be memories that last a lifetime. Although James Dean is no longer with us, he had a very fantastic life that I know couldn’t have been any better… May he rest in peace. February ended with a fantastic Review Show where a handful of formers gathered at Sidekicks Saloon for a night of fundraising and FUNraising! Along with the show, we also released the flyer for the upcoming pageant season. I am so excited things are coming together for the contest in April, and be on the lookout for further ways that you can help contribute to our organization’s success! Listed below are our last 2 preliminaries and chances for you to qualify for the Miss Gay Missouri 2016 pageant: Saturday, March 12th – Miss Spirit of Saint Louis, Missouri Theme – A Night in Olympus - Goddesses; honoring the reigning Ciera St. James Monet Location – Saint Louis, MO, at The Grey Fox Promoted by Orlando Burton Saturday, March 19th – Miss Paris of the Plains, Missouri Theme – Paris in Bloom Location – Kansas City, MO at Sidekicks Saloon Promoted by Deejers Designs In closing, I want to leave everyone with this quote: “I believe success is preparation, because opportunity is going to knock on your door sooner or later… but the question is are you prepared to answer?” – Omar Epps Here’s to a MAGNIFICENT March, Kyla Breeze, MGMA 2015 FROM THE BOARD
Hello Everyone! As the Miss Gay Missouri America pageant is swiftly getting closer, I would like to mention the latest happenings- The Miss Gay Kansas City pageant hosted by L’Oreal and Valerie Knyte, was held at Missie B’s, Saturday, February 6th. The winner was Monique Heart, and 1s Alternate was Ruby Diamond. Congratulations to these 2 contestants vying for the title of the NEXT Miss Gay Missouri America. We had a great turnout at Sidekicks Saloon, in Kansas City this past weekend February 26th, for the Miss Gay Missouri America Benefit Show. Total amount gained was $546. Upcoming pageants include- Miss Gay Spirit of St. Louis, hosted by Orlando Burton aka Rolanda Devereux, on Saturday, March 12, at The Grey Fox, in St. Louis, Missouri. Miss Gay Paris of the Plains, hosted by Dan Rinehart, on Saturday, March 19, at Sidekicks Saloon, in Kansas City, Missouri. Everyone is looking forward to seeing the beautiful themed pageant, Memoir of a Geisha, by Kyla Breeze. Sure to be one of the most beautiful and memorable Miss Gay Missouri America Pageants. Miss Gay America, Asia T O’Hara will be gracing us with her presence and on stage at the Miss Gay Missouri America pageant, held at the Arts Asylum, in Kansas City, Missouri, April 7-9,2016. Let’s keep in touch and keep busy during these last few weeks before our pageant begins- Much Love, Steve Hurley Happy February Everyone, We are drawing closer and closer to the big dance in April, and with that I hope all of your preparations are in full swing! As we near the big event and tip-toe nearer to crowning my successor, my schedule is getting busier and busier… no time like the present to be hip pad deep in preparations! January contained another preliminary, this time in Columbia Missouri. For this trip I brought down my main man, James Dean, and one of our already qualified contestants, Priscilla. About halfway through the trip from Kansas City (while headed straight to Registration at Yin Yang Nightclub), James Dean had decided to leave me sitting in a pool of warm, fresh dog urine. And you know what they say, regardless of being onstage or behind the scenes, with every candid moment… the show must go on! BUT not ‘til AFTER a trip to the local Target for a new pair of pants and underwear! Miss Heart of Missouri promoted by Amanda Lay brought out 2 contestants, D’Rihanna Weatherbey and Musica Malone. Amanda established a very well rounded panel of judges to give the best critiques possible to her contestants: Atheena Voce (MGMA 2004), Christa Collins(MGMA 2013), and Patrick Hall (one of the promoters for Miss Gay Northwest). Both gentleman brought their A-game and showcased seamless packages throughout the weekend, which resulted in a one point separation leading to the crowning of D’Rihanna. Congratulations to both contestants for entertaining and showcasing strong packages that I’m sure will blossom into something spectacular at the state level. Witnessing these 2 contestants during their critique session and observing the already turning wheels to the feedback they were receiving was wonderful. That evening after the pageant, I had the privilege of sticking around to enjoy a booking in the weekly Saturday show at Yin Yang Nightclub with a cast that included my MGM sister Atheena, the comedic and witty Muffie Beaverhousen, the dancing diva Jennicka Fierce, and the newly crowned Miss Heart of Missouri D’Rihanna Weatherbey. To say that the audience in Columbia is captivated by the art form is an understatement… they truly come out to be part of a show and the love felt throughout the club was astounding. Being part of such a well-rounded group of entertainers led to so much fun and excitement!
During the month of January, I also had the honor of collaborating with the ever-so talented Andy Chambers and his new partner in crime and photography Shane Linden. The creative product that these two partner up to produce is absolutely incredible! I cannot wait to show everyone what we have come up with to illustrate the already chosen theme for MGMA 2016, Memoir of a Geisha. My mind is absolutely blown and my passion for this theme completely rejuvenated! As we edge closer to April, I want all of you to be very mindful of what you are producing and exhibiting this year, both on and off the stage. I believe this year is really going to come down to consistency, and that means feeling strongly about just one or two categories is not going to do the trick this year. Pageantry is the name, and consistency is the game! It took me 5 years to capture this prestigious title, and it all comes back to years of working on what I was producing and ensuring that the quality was there across all 5 categories. Dust off those critique sheets, meticulously review each of your looks, study up on our rules, and place yourself on the flip side of the coin as a judge. Multiple contestants have reached out to me this year, and I constantly find myself asking, “What would you think of that if you were a judge?” If it requires an explanation, keep in mind that you will not be given an opportunity to explain yourself until the scores have already been assigned. All of you have very clear visions, and STAY TRUE to those visions, but tweak what is necessary to ensure you are confidently providing something vivid and concise. And lastly, if you are not yet qualified, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?! Listed below are our last 3 preliminaries as well as a “save the date” reminder for a Miss Gay Missouri, America benefit that we have scheduled in Kansas City: Saturday, February 6th – Miss Gay Kansas City, Missouri Theme – Mardi Gras; honoring the reigning Moltyn Decadence Location – Kansas City, MO, at Missie B’s Promoted by Jeff Hickman (L’oreal) and Sam Vermillion (Valari Knyte) Friday February 26th – Miss Gay Missouri Review Show Sidekicks Saloon at 10PM Saturday, March 5th – Miss Gay Northwest, Missouri Theme – Grace and Glamour; honoring the reigning L’oreal Location – Saint Joseph, MO, venue TBD Promoted by Dustin Mathews and Patrick Hall Saturday, March 12th – Miss Spirit of Saint Louis, Missouri Theme – A Night in Olympus - Goddesses; honoring the reigning Ciera St. James Monet Location – Saint Louis, MO, at The Grey Fox Promoted by Orlando Burton Thank you all for what has continued to be a fantastic reign! Forever Yours, Kyla Breeze, MGMA 2015 FROM THE ALUMNI: Hello family, friends and supporters of MGMA, The first month of 2016 is over and it seems that this year is off and running. It is said that as one gets older time seems to fly by and I’m beginning to believe that. With every New Year we always make resolutions of what we want to accomplish. Lose weight, pay off bills, go out more/go out less, stop wasting money, and get more rest are just a few of things we want to do. As we all look back on 2015, the year that is forever gone, we must ask ourselves “did I leave the legacy that I intended to leave on the world and others. Most of us, including myself, can honestly say, “No I didn’t”. There are things that we would change if we could, but the past is the past and 2015 is forever behind us. With 2016 staring us in the face we all have the opportunity before us to make this year the best and take full advantage of the qualities we all have with-in ourselves. So without sounding preachy take a moment to read and then think about how you, me, all of us can benefit from becoming the person, community, world, we are truly meant to be “I decided, very early on, just to accept life unconditionally; I never expected it to do anything special for me, yet I seemed to accomplish far more than I had ever hoped. Most of the time it just happened to me without my ever seeking it.” ~ Audrey Hepburn If you ask me, there are certain qualities each and every human being should have. Qualities that have the power to help each and every one of us to connect with our own selves and the world around us at a deeper level. Crafting better lives for ourselves and those around us and making the world a happier and a lot brighter place to be in. Qualities that can help all of us achieve our goals in life. And these qualities are: 1. Faith Faith in yourself and all that you are. Faith in your abilities. Faith in life and faith in the Infinite intelligence that created us all. “He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” ~ Matthew 17:20 2. Courage Courage to create the life you deep down inside know that you deserve to live. Courage to go where most people don’t dare to go. Courage to be the person you were born to be. “Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage.” ~ Maya Angelou 3. Love Love for yourself. Love for your friends. Love for your family. Love for your work. Love for your pets. Love for your planet and love for your life. Love for those who love you, and love for those who don’t. “The heart that loves is forever young.” ~ Greek proverb 4. Deep Sense of Connection A feeling of belonging and a deep sense of connection to all things, all people and all places. Recognizing yourself in everything and everyone. Understanding the Oneness of all things. “If I go into the place in myself that is love, and you go into the place in yourself that is love, we are together in love. Then you and I are truly in love, the state of being love. That’s the entrance to Oneness.” ~ Ram Dass 5. Imagination The ability to inspire and feel inspired. The capacity to use your mind to create new worlds and discover new realms. To go where no one has ever gone before and craft things that nobody has ever crafted before. “Logic will get you from A to Z; imagination will get you everywhere.” ~ Albert Einstein 6. Denial of all fearful things The ability to deny all things that originate from fear. To ignore, reject and show complete indifference towards those things that cause you to feel separate from your fellow human being, separate from the world around you, separate from the things you dream and desire, and separate from God itself. “You have but two emotions, fear and love, one you made and one was given you.” ~ A Course In Miracles 7. Thankfulness And attitude of gratitude. Praising and giving thanks for the things that are and for the things that aren’t. For the things you already have, for the life you are now living and for the many blessings life sent and will continue to send your way. And always say THANK YOU to those that do for you. “What if you gave someone a gift, and they neglected to thank you for it – would you be likely to give them another? Life is the same way. In order to attract more of the blessings that life has to offer, you must truly appreciate what you already have.” ~ Ralph Marston 8. Open-mindedness A clean and open mind that welcomes everything and everyone. Without the need to judge, label and condemn the things, people and experiences that are not aligned with who you are, with what you stand for and with what you yourself believe in. “We need to give each other the space to grow, to be ourselves, to exercise our diversity. We need to give each other space so that we may both give and receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness, dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion.” ~ Max de Pree 9. Trust Trust in the power and wisdom of life. Trust that you are never given more than you can handle. Trust in yourself, trust in your inner power and wisdom and trust in your ability to manifest the things you want to manifest. “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, ‘I used everything you gave me’.” Erma Bombeck 10. Detachment The strength to let go of all things that no longer serve you. All places and all people that no longer need or want to be in your life. The ability to let go of your attachment to limitations, fears, doubts and insecurities. Taking your focus away from who you now are and placing it on to who you want to become. The strength to let the old you “die”, to let the old you go, so that the new you can be born. “Until man lets go of that which he is now conscious of being, he will not become that which he desires to be.” ~ Neville Goddard, Your Faith is Your Fortune And by simply embracing these 10 qualities your whole life will improve and you will discover yourself to be a greater person by far more than you ever dreamed yourself to be. What do you say? Do you think you can embrace these qualities and make them part of your everyday life? I say “YES” that you, we, I, everyone can. Sincerely, Miss Gay Missouri Alumni Family Happy New Year Everyone, I hope everyone is staying warm during what has been a season lacking cold fronts! While we are knee deep climbing our way out of holiday cheer I wanted to take a moment to tell you about our recent preliminary and highlight the preliminaries that we have yet to come. Miss Gay Springfield took place on November 7th, and to truly capture the legacy held behind this prestigious title we also had a review show the evening before. I travelled to Springfield on Friday afternoon where I was surprised to find a welcome basket in my room that was put together by the promoters, Autumn Holiday and Vince Edwards. Such a lovely treat! After unpacking and getting everything neatly organized for the 2 day event, I took a trip with some Kansas City peeps that were also there for the event to the local shopping area. What’s a trip to another city without a quick exploration of the local Ulta Beauty, Shoe Carnival, and Target?! To our surprise, the stores have the EXACT same things we had in Kansas City… Whodathunk?! That evening was a hoot performing with Autumn Holiday and all the formers. Sharing the backstage environment is always an experience when you don’t know what all personalities will be joining you during the show. A word to the wise: if it looks like a can of hair spray, smells like a can of hair spray, and SPRAYS like a can of hair spray… DOUBLE CHECK it! It could wind up being spray adhesive that leads to your own demise. J It was a blast performing with these individuals, and that one wig will never be the same. The next day began with Registration where we had 4 individuals show up in an attempt to capture the title of Miss Gay Springfield. It was inspiring to sit in on the Male Interviews of these 4 gentlemen as they all had something unique and different to offer to the title, and they did a tremendous job of showcasing their brand to the judges. But at the end of the night there could only be one, and Karma T. Cassidy was victorious in capturing the title with Priscilla placing as her first alternate. Congratulations to both of these entertainers, as they are now qualified to compete at the state competition in April which is swiftly approaching. This brings us to an even 10 contestants already qualified to compete at this year’s state competition, which will be held in Kansas City on April 7th, 8th, and 9th at the Arts Asylum. There are 8 more tickets to claim with 4 more preliminaries quickly on our radar: Saturday, January 16th – Miss Gay Heart of Missouri Theme – Do Ask Do Tell; honoring the reigning Destiny Michelle Location – Columbia, MO at Yin Yang Nightclub Promoted by Amanda Lay Saturday, February 6th – Miss Gay Kansas City, Missouri Theme – TBD; honoring the reigning Moltyn Decadence Location – Kansas City, MO, at Missie B’s Promoted by Jeff Hickman (L’oreal) and Sam Vermillion (Valari Knyte) Saturday, March 5th – Miss Gay Northwest, Missouri Theme – Grace and Glamour; honoring the reigning L’oreal Location – Saint Joseph, MO, venue TBD Promoted by Dustin Mathews and Patrick Hall Saturday, March 12th – Miss Spirit of Saint Louis, Missouri Theme – A Night in Olympus - Goddesses; honoring the reigning Ciera St. James Monet Location – Saint Louis, MO, at The Grey Fox Promoted by Orlando Burton I hope everyone stayed safe during their travels and took some extra time to capture those special moments with your loved ones!
